The Executive Team

As of January 1, 2002, all District Energy St. Paul employees, with the exception of the president, became employees of Ever-Green Energy, LLC (formerly Market Street Energy Company, LLC), a for-profit District Energy affiliate. Ever-Green Energy is dedicated to serving the energy needs of the region through innovative, environmentally sound and cost-effective programs, projects and services. The company manages operations for District Energy St. Paul and its affiliate, District Cooling St. Paul.

Anders J. Rydaker was named president of District Energy St. Paul and District Cooling St. Paul in September 1993. He is also the president and CEO of Ever-Green Energy (formerly Market Street Energy). Rydaker has more than 30 years of experience in the district energy field. In 2003, Rydaker received Sweden's Prestigious Energy Prize for developing numerous district cooling systems in the country, some of which have reduced electrical usage by more than 75 percent. In June 2004, Rydaker was elected chair of the 800-member International District Energy Association. Between 1983 and 1990, he provided on-site consulting service during construction of St. Paul’s hot water district heating distribution system and conversion of a steam heating plant. During this time, he also initiated several energy-saving projects for District Energy, including combined heat and power and development of the initial district cooling system feasibility studies. A native of Sweden, Rydaker has a B.S. in mechanical engineering from Uppsala Technical College.

William M. Mahlum was named executive vice president and general counsel of Ever-Green Energy (formerly Market Street Energy) in 2005. Mahlum has practiced law for more than 35 years, focusing on energy law, business organization, and finance for more than 25 years. He has provided legal counsel and consulting services to District Energy St. Paul since the company was founded in 1979. All rate and contract matters have been his responsibility for more than 25 years. Mahlum also played a significant role in the founding of Ever-Green Energy (formerly Market Street Energy) in 1998, again providing legal and consulting services in addition to helping the company achieve full financing for its renewable energy combined heat and power plant.

Joyce C. Anderson is the vice president/controller for Ever-Green Energy (formerly Market Street Energy). Anderson has over 25 years experience in accounting. She has directed the accounting activities for all companies Ever-Green Energy provides services to since 1989. Anderson oversees the annual budget process, audit functions, tax filings and financial statements for all companies. She is a Certified Public Accountant with a B.A. in accounting from Metropolitan State University.

Michael J. Burns joined District Energy in 1998 and is the vice president of operations and engineering for Ever-Green Energy (formerly Market Street Energy). Burns is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the district heating and cooling plant and distribution systems. In December 2002, he assumed responsibility for operation of St. Paul’s new combined heat and power plant. Burns possesses more than 12 years of engineering and managerial experience in power plant operations at electric utilities where his responsibilities included plant maintenance, modification, system testing and resolution of plant reliability and operational performance problems. Burns has a B.S. in mechanical engineering from the University of Notre Dame and an M.B.A. from Northwestern University’s Kellogg Graduate School of Management.


Andrew E. Kasid has provided financial analysis to District Energy since 1990 and is the senior vice president of finance for Ever-Green Energy (formerly Market Street Energy). He is responsible for project finance, financial analysis of business opportunities, forecasting and budgeting, energy rate analysis, energy futures contracts and analysis of energy purchases, and investment analysis and management. He also oversees the computer network system. Kasid has more than 17 years of financial experience and has participated in a majority of the company's financings. He has an M.B.A. in finance from the University of Minnesota's Carlson School of Management, a B.A. in financial economics from Gustavus Adolphus College, and he has earned the Chartered Financial Analyst designation.

 

Brenda L. Nelson joined Ever-Green Energy (formerly Market Street Energy) as vice president of administration and human resources in March 2007. Nelson has more than 20 years of experience in human resources and most recently was vice president of human resources at DBI Consulting Inc. Her previous experience includes 13 years with Wells Fargo Corporation and two years with GMAC-RFC. Nelson earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Management and Communications and her Master of Arts degree in Organizational Management from Concordia University in St. Paul.

 


Alexander H. Sleiman has worked with District Energy customers for 20 years and is the vice president of customer relations for Ever-Green Energy (formerly Market Street Energy). Customers refer to Sleiman as "Mr. District Energy." He has more than 35 years of experience in energy management engineering, specializing in the design, specification and construction supervision of heating, ventilating and air-conditioning systems. One of Sleiman’s initial responsibilities upon joining District Energy in 1983 was to develop building conversion standards for Saint Paul’s district heating and cooling customers. Previously he worked with communities across the state that were converting from steam to hot water district heating systems or exploring the development of combined heat and power systems. Sleiman has a B.S. in industrial technology from Bradley University and is a member of the American Society of Plumbing Engineers and the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air Conditioning Engineers.


Kenneth W. Smith
is senior vice president of operations and chief operating officer of District Energy St. Paul and District Cooling St. Paul. He is also senior vice president
of operations at Ever-Green Energy (formerly Market Street Energy). He joined the company in March 2006, and has more than 20 years of experience in the consulting/engineering/construction industry. Most recently, he was a vice president at Stanley Consultants Inc., responsible for business development, client relations and management of the Minneapolis office. His previous experience includes 16 years with Black & Veatch Corporation, Kansas City, Missouri, where he progressed from a design/project engineer position to director of engineering and operations of the Advanced Technology Division. Smith’s global project experiences include energy, educational, industrial, aviation, government, commercial, and complex high-tech/mission-critical facilities. Smith earned his B.S. degree in electrical engineering from North Dakota State University and his Executive M.B.A. from the University of St. Thomas, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota. He is a registered professional engineer and a member of several professional organizations.
