Success Story

The Lowry building serves as a model for the successful redevelopment of aging downtown office buildings.

The Lowry

Located in the heart of downtown Saint Paul, the 12-story Lowry building has been converted from a medical center to 135 true loft condominiums. Retail, restaurants and The Lowry Theater occupy the first floor of the building; the skyway level is devoted to modern office spaces; and the residential units are located on the upper ten floors.

Built in 1912, the Lowry features 12-foot-high ceilings, terrazzo floors, valet parking and interesting cityscape or river views. The building's long, narrow footprint results in long condominium units along the outside walls that have anywhere from four to six large energy-efficient, double-hung windows. The condos range in size from about 850 to 1,400 square feet. As of July, all but four have been sold to buyers attracted to loft living in a historic building.

The Lowry's exterior offers plenty of architectural detail. Designed in the popular Classical Revival style, the building features some of Saint Paul's finest terracotta work, most notably in ornamental clusters that adorn the 10th and 12th floors.

Conversion of the Lowry to residential space in 2004 included connection to District Energy's heating and cooling systems. Two other highly successful loft conversion projects by the same developer, the Rossmor and Produce Exchange buildings, are also District Energy customers.

Testimonial

"I appreciate knowing that my heating is coming from green energy, and knowing that this source is also serving most of the downtown area. I like the stable rates of my new system. I also like the customer service."
